Hillary Clinton’s historic fall

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is on her four-nation tour in the Persian Gulf region, has made a surprise visit to Yemen. She became the first American State Secretary to visit that country in 20 years, after the visit by James Baker in 1990, when he tried to get Yemen’s support for the UN resolution backing the use of force against Iraq which had occupied Kuwait, but was rebuffed.Since then, relations between Washington and Sana’a have never been too cordial. Last year, Yemen was called by the US intelligence as the country hosting the strongest branch of Al Qaeda, the so called “Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula”. Yemen is also known as a country where Al Qaeda’s training camps are located, and the source of numerous terrorist attacks against the US, including those committed by parcels sent via ordinary mail to targets in the US.
